Lysine - Studies Show: Can Prevent Skin Outbreaks and May Provide Overall Skin Health

Lysine is an amino acid that works with other nutrients as a “building block”. There are twenty amino acids and our body naturally makes ten of them. The other ten come from our diet and/or supplements. This amino acid has been studied in the prevention of inflammatory acne, cold sores, and canker sores.

Some of these amino acids provide advantages at the cellular level. Lysine is one of those amino acids.

Cold sores (herpes simplex labialis) research suggests that Lysine can reduce cold sore outbreaks when taken orally and help with an outbreak when applied as a cream to the skin.

Canker sores are another condition greatly helped by taking Lysine orally. Research shows that taking 500 mg of Lysine daily can prevent canker sores and 4000 mg daily decreases the length of an outbreak of canker sores.

Getting adequate amounts of amino acids, including lysine, along with other healthy nutrients may contribute to overall skin health . It takes most skin cells at least 10 to 30 days to turn over. This means that any dietary changes may not show the full effects in your skin for about a month or longer.
