How does Acid Reducer with Enzymes from LifeSource Vitamins work in the stomach to provide relief?

Our Acid Reducer with Enzymes has a soothing influence on the smooth muscle, esophageal mucosa (mucous membranes), and blood vessels of the gastrointestinal system (GI) by buffering the hydrochloric acid secretions that cause the irritation experienced by those with GERD or acid reflux. LifeSource's Acid Reducer with Enzymes does not treat GERD or acid reflux disease but does relieve the symptoms. The acid-neutralizing composition of our Acid Reducer includes is loaded with enzymes as well as the longer-acting alkaline mineral calcium carbonate that will help neutralize the acid produced by the stomach, slow down the digestion of food, and encourage the complete digestion of our food. These alkaline minerals are effective indirectly reducing stomach acidity. This product is equally helpful in reducing the acidity of orange and tomato juice, as well as caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea.*

The proper low pH (acidity) in the stomach should not be confused with the overall pH of the body. This is sometimes assessed by urinating on a pH test strip with the first urination of the morning. This test approximates the pH of the bloodstream as a means of assessing the body's reserves of alkaline, buffering minerals, which affects a wide range of health factors, including bone health. This is about metabolic pH, not stomach acid or foods that taste acidy.*

Acid reflux, commonly called heartburn, is caused when digestive acids flow up from the stomach and into the esophagus. The esophagus, located in the heart region of the chest, becomes irritated with a burning sensation.

There are lesser-known symptoms other than heartburn for acid reflux as well: gas, bloating, flatulence, and even apparently unrelated symptoms such as chronic dry coughing, sour or bitter mouth between meals, trouble swallowing, hoarseness, and wheezing.

Acid reflux usually occurs from a failure of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) to contract after swallowing food, thus allowing stomach acids to come up toward and into the esophagus.

This muscular failure to contract can be from several situations, including obesity, lying down after meals, eating just before bedtime, eating disagreeable processed fried foods, and overeating. Excess caffeine or alcohol can weaken the LES and induce occasional or reoccurring acid reflux.

Hiatal hernia, where the diaphragm muscle protrudes over the top of the stomach, is another contributing factor to acid reflux. If acid reflux occurs often on a regular basis, the condition becomes gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which can develop into cancer of the esophagus if ignored. Read more on GERD below.

What is GERD?

Hydrochloric acid is secreted due to chemical signals in the stomach. This digestive acid secretion is one of the links in the chain of events necessary for the proper digestion of food. Some people overproduce stomach acid and suffer from occasional heartburn when they consume certain acid-stimulating foods and beverages.

A more serious condition is called GERD (Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease). GERD is a syndrome caused by a dysfunctional lower esophageal sphincter that permits an upward flow of gastric hydrochloric acid into the esophagus. In other words, the top of the stomach fails to close properly and allows stomach acid to escape upwards. This abnormal upward flow of gastric acid causes the burning and continual erosion of the esophageal tissue. This can happen even if the stomach lacks enough acid to properly digest proteins and minerals, and is sometimes caused by food intolerance, stress or other factors.

Is LifeSource Vitamins Acid Reducer as effective in buffering hydrochloric acid as some other over the counter products?

Laboratory testing comparing our Acid Reducer to four major over-the-counter brands of antacids has shown that Acid Reducer is faster acting in its ability to neutralize a hydrochloric acid solution of pH 2.20. Its stronger "base nature" (alkalinity) initiates the buffering effect on the H+ ions (positive hydrogen), allowing the neutralizing effect to react quickly and over a longer period of time for extended relief.*

Is Acid Reducer like the prescription proton pump inhibitors that stop the secretion of gastric acid in the stomach?

No, LifeSource Vitamins Acid Reducer is not a proton or gastric acid pump inhibitor. It does inhibit the production of gastrin (the hormone that stimulates the production of gastric juice), as proton pump inhibitors do.

Over-the-counter (OTC) or prescribed medications lead to other problems, we have a solution that will have no side effects.
