Vitamin C - Studies Show Greater Bone Health

Many studies with large populations have found that higher Vitamin C supplementation is associated with greater bone mass. The same studies also found that lower Vitamin C intake was associated with bone loss. Some studies also showed a positive association between taking Vitamin C supplements and improved bone mineral density.

A 2018 review and analysis found that overall, greater Vitamin C intake showed a 33% lower risk of osteoporosis and a lower risk of hip fractures. This is because Vitamin C is required by enzymes that produce the protein matrix in bones.

In a study with mice with genetic defects that make them reliant on Vitamin C (as humans are) multiple bone abnormalities were discovered when the mice were fed a C-deficient diet. After they gave this mice Vitamin C supplements those abnormalities were resolved.

Vitamin C has a tremendous impact on bone health, including restoring normal development of critical bone-forming cells.
