Triphala has been used in the Ayurvedic system of medicine for thousands of years as a bowel tonic laxative, blood purifier, and whole body rejuvenator. Triphala means “three fruits”. These are: Chebulic myrobalan, Belleric myrobalan, and Amia. Chebulic myrobalan, also known as haritaki, is believed to help regulate the nervous system and is considered to be heating in Chinese medicine. Belleric myrobalan, also known as bibhitaki, also considered to be heating, helps clear excess mucous from the body. Amia, also known as amalaki, is one of the highest known sources of vitamin C, is anti-inflammatory, and is thought to be cooling in Chinese medicine. The combinations of these fruits together are balancing and will improve assimilation, regulate elimination, enhance detoxification, and rejuvenate the entire system.

Triphala restores digestive function, encourages beneficial intestinal bacteria, enhances enzyme production, helps draw stagnated wastes out of the intestines, and encourages healthy and complete elimination. The formula is non-irritating, non-habit forming, can be used on a daily basis, and is gentle enough for those more sensitive to cleansing, and is suitable for vegetarians.

Studies have shown Triphala to have a wide-range of medicinal properties including antioxidant, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, adaptogenic, hypoglycemic, analgesic, antipyretic, antimutagenic, and anticancer. Triphala contains polyphenols and flavonoids, including gallic acid, chebulagic acid, and chebulinic acid, which are believed to contribute to its many health benefits.
