Vitamin D - Chronic Pain Management Treatment

A study done in Brazil by the Universidade Federal de Sao Paulo’s department of psychology found that Vitamin D supplements and a sound sleep habit can help manage pain.

The reason for this is that sleep and pain share the same neurotransmitters. Low Vitamin D levels are present in infectious diseases, inflammation and sleep disorders – all of these affect pain.

Another study done by the Scandinavian Journal of Primary Health Care claims that Vitamin D deficiency is increasingly becoming an epidemic over a period of time. They also show it as a possible treatment for chronic pain. Chronic pain is also an epidemic with about one-third of our population suffering from some sort of pain. With a majority of this population taking pain medication, chronic pain causes a huge amount of unnecessary distress.

Low Vitamin D levels are often accompanied by scorching sensation in the feet and pain in the limbs. This makes the conditions worse by the rise to conditions such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, chronic low back pain, knee pain, and hip pain.

It usually takes a week or two to notice improvements but it can take as much as three months to recover. Muscle pain, weakness, and fatigue can take six months or longer. It is best to allow up to nine months to fully evaluate how effective Vitamin D supplements have been.
