A 2017 study showed that lack of sleep can cause parts of synapses, which is the connections between brain cells breaking down, leading to long term cognitive issues.
Insufficient/Poor sleep has been linked to Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart Attacks, Shortened Telomeres and not living as long as if you had adequate sleep.
Oher wide-ranging risks of Poor Sleep:

Melatonin protects the brain, helps with stroke victims damaged brain areas, helps with Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s, and improves the Blood-Brain Barrier, which is essential to neural functioning.
