Resveratrol Aids Memory Loss Study Shows

Resveratrol has been widely known for its potential to prevent heart disease, but a study by Dr. Shetty, a professor in the department of molecular and cellular medicine and director of neurosciences at the Institute for Regenerative Medicine, and his research team that included other researchers from the health science center believe it also has positive effects on the hippocampus, an area of the brain that is critical to functions such as memory, learning, and mood.

Because both humans and animals show a decline in cognitive capacity after middle age, the findings may have benefits for treating memory loss in the elderly. Resveratrol may even be able to help people afflicted with Alzheimer's disease.

Dr. Shetty claims that the study provides novel evidence that resveratrol treatment in late middle age can help improve memory and mood function in old age.

In other studies, overall cognitive performance was significantly better in those taking resveratrol and this trend was reflected in each specific task. The trend of improvements in overall cognition and domains of verbal and semantic memory in the resveratrol group indicates a potential for resveratrol to improve all memory functions and supports resveratrol supplementation as a potential strategy for attenuating premature cognitive decline in post-menopausal women.

Marginal improvements were also observed in mood states, showing the possibility of additional benefits to quality of life in the years following menopause.
