Studies have shown that there are important benefits that by taking Omega-3 fatty acids can help people with dry eye disease.

Researchers at the University of Bologna in Italy held 17 separate trials with a total of 3,363 people with dry eye. They evaluated the effects of Omega-3 supplements on these participants which included both men and women (all with dry eye disease). They found that in all of the participants, Omega-3 supplements were associated with a reduction in dry eye symptoms.

It appears that omega-3 fatty acids can improve the eye's oil film that's produced by small glands on the edge of the eyelid, called the meibomian glands. Also, studies looking into the benefits of Omega-3 fatty acid supplements have found fewer dry eye symptoms in people who take the supplement.

An important feature of dry eye is inflammation and this condition when associated with Omega-3 deficiency, can be linked to multiple other systemic illnesses. Many patients in the western world with dry eye also have age-related macular degeneration. In Japan, these two conditions are virtually nonexistent due to a diet rich in Omega-3 EFA’s.
