Melatonin - Studies Show Helpful for Circadian Rhythm


Circadian rhythm regulates all aspects of our health from sleep to heart rate, blood pressure, hormone release, neurological function, as well as obesity. Researchers have found that it can aid longevity.

One of the main functions of circadian rhythm is to regulate our sleep cycle. Responding to outside environments our bodies begin to release increased Melatonin levels as light levels fall and lower Melatonin levels as light levels rise.

Sleep problems are usually caused by disrupted biological clocks. This puts people at risk for cardiovascular, neurological and metabolic disorders, i.e., obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.

Our bodies contain two types of clocks that respond to circadian rhythm - the central clock and the peripheral clock. We function optimally when these two clocks are in harmony.

The central clock depends on the eyes of the brain to detect light. At the first light of the day, our body turns on the systems. When night arrives the systems begin to shut down and prepare for sleep. This is regulated through Melatonin secretions from the brain’s pineal gland.

Melatonin also increases the production of the longevity-promoting protein SIRT1. Studies have shown that SIRT1 not only helps regulate circadian rhythm but also protects against the diseases of aging.

Melatonin tunes and regulates the central clock so that it can better communicate with the body’s peripheral clocks.
