Elderberry - The Ultimate Flu Fighter Another Study Finds

A study, by a group of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering researchers from the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Engineering and IT has determined how an ancient remedy, the Elderberry fruit, helps fight against influenza. This study showed that the compounds from the elderberries can directly inhibit the virus’s entry and replication in human cells and that it helps strengthen a body’s immune response to the Flu Virus .

Elderberries inhibit the early stages of infection by blocking key viral proteins responsible for both the viral attachment and entry into the host cells.

The phytochemicals from the elderberry juice has been shown to be effective at stopping the virus infecting the cells, however to the surprise of the researchers were even more effective at inhibiting viral propagation at later stages of the influenza cycle when the cells had already been infected with the virus.

In this randomized study of 60 adults with flu-like symptoms, those who took 15ml of the elderberry syrup four times a day saw their symptoms clear up on the avg of four days earlier than those who took the placebo syrup.
